You’re going to fail this year’s goals. You need a reset and a 90-day sprint, now.

We’re half way through the year, and for many the New Year goals have become a distant memory.

You started off strong but it tapered off somewhere. You aren’t as far along as you wanted or needed to be. You didn’t get the promotion you were going to, nor the pay rise, you didn’t study for that qualification, you aren’t 5kg lighter.

STOP. Now is the time to ask yourself the ultimate uncomfortable question.

Which distractions in your life have become disguised as priorities?

This question hit me hard. I sat with it for a couple of days. The more I thought about it, the more layers I unravelled. It can be a little overwhelming but it’s the shock you need.

The problem is, if everything feels urgent, nothing truly important gets done.

There is a solution - it’s simple but it’s not easy. Here’s what I’m doing to get back on track, with intention, and finish the year strong.

Firstly, I reviewed the goals I originally set out. I asked myself “are they still important to me?”. Then I asked “do I have other goals I want to achieve?”. With honesty and ruthlessness, I’ve scrapped anything that’s not important.

Second, realising that too many goals is exactly how I ended up here. You need to choose your North Star. One goal that will make the biggest difference and get you the most return for your effort.

I build a structure around the goal. Small, repeatable actions that give me laser focus and help me move the dial:

  • 2-3 weekly non-negotiables

  • 1-2 daily habits.

In the example of launching a side hustle this could look like

  • Weekly: 4 pieces of social media content, 1 newsletter

  • Daily: Create/Write for 30 minutes.

Lastly, I’ve created a 90-day sprint plan . At each point I know where I am and what I’m doing next.

  • Weekly focus: what will move the dial this week?

  • Weekly reflection: what worked, what didn’t, what to change

  • Milestones: Checkpoints at week 4, week 8, week 12.

I’ve followed this process and I’ve given it to others to follow. It’s one of the best ways to ensure you get back on track and focus on what’s important.
